Just Ask Arkansas City Presbyterian VillageThe earlier dementia is diagnosed, the earlier potential treatments can be started and the earlier preparations can be made for the future. There are 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease and you can learn about them Nov. 13.

“Know the 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s” is a free presentation at Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor. Barrick Wilson, a community volunteer and senior advocate, will explain how Alzheimer’s disease affects lives by listing the 10 warning signs, illustrated by experiences with his wife, who is now in an Alzheimer’s care community.

More than 5 million Americans live with Alzheimer’s disease today, and that number is estimated to grow to more than 13 million by 2050. In the early stages, people have difficulty remembering recently learned facts and forget names and how certain objects are used. As the disease advances, symptoms include confusion, language breakdown and irritability.

Wilson will explain that “dementia” is a medical umbrella term to describe symptoms of brain disease. There are more than 50 types of dementia, and Alzheimer’s is the most prevalent.

“Know the 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s” will begin at 2 p.m. Nov. 13 at Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor, 1711 N. Fourth. The presentation is free, and refreshments will be served. The talk is part of Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor’s Just Ask series, a free, ongoing lifelong learning program featuring information from local, regional and national experts on topics of interest to older adults and their families.
